GRAF Saphir NS4 1200L Grease Separator

The GRAF Saphir 1200L grease separator removes fats, oils, grease and settleable food solids from commercial wastewater. This compact underground NS4 separator handles a nominal flow rate of 4 litres per second and incorporates a 500-litre sludge trap.

Commercial kitchens and food-preparation premises can release fats, oils and grease, commonly known as FOG, into their drainage systems. As the wastewater cools, these substances may solidify inside pipes and downstream treatment equipment. Consequently, excessive FOG can contribute to blockages, foul odours, pest activity and increased maintenance costs.

How does the Saphir grease separator work?

Wastewater from sinks, dishwashers and suitable food-preparation areas enters the separator. First, the tank reduces the speed of the incoming flow. This allows heavier food particles and solids to sink into the integrated sludge trap.

Meanwhile, fats, oils and grease rise to the surface because they have a lower density than water. The separator retains this floating grease layer while the separated wastewater continues towards the sewer, septic tank or wastewater treatment system.

Therefore, the GRAF Saphir separator reduces the amount of FOG reaching downstream drainage and treatment systems. However, the operator must arrange regular inspection, emptying and cleaning to maintain effective separation.

Main specifications

  • Manufacturer: GRAF
  • Model: Saphir underground grease separator
  • Nominal size: NS4
  • Nominal flow rate: 4 litres per second
  • Tank capacity: 1200 litres
  • Sludge trap capacity: 500 litres
  • Integrated grease collection area
  • Integrated sludge trap
  • Sampling point
  • Compact underground design
  • Suitable for appropriate commercial wastewater applications

Typical applications

The GRAF Saphir NS4 grease separator may suit:

  • Restaurants and commercial kitchens
  • Cafés and takeaways
  • Public houses and small hotels
  • Schools and workplace canteens
  • Nursing homes and care facilities
  • Small food-production premises
  • Other businesses that discharge grease-laden wastewater

A qualified designer must confirm the correct separator size for each project. In particular, the designer should consider the maximum wastewater flow, number of meals, operating hours, water temperature, detergents and expected grease loading.

Compact alternative to the Diamant NS4

Both the Saphir 1200L and Diamant 2200L models offer an NS4 nominal flow rate. However, the Saphir uses a smaller tank and a 500-litre sludge trap. Therefore, its compact design may suit sites with lower expected sludge volumes or restricted installation space.

The larger Diamant NS4 includes a 700-litre sludge trap and offers additional storage capacity. Consequently, customers should select between the models according to the site assessment and expected usage rather than flow rate alone.

Installation and maintenance

Select and size grease separators according to the site requirements and the relevant parts of EN 1825. Furthermore, the installation must provide safe access for inspection, sampling, emptying and cleaning.

A competent contractor should assess the inlet and outlet levels, ventilation, ground conditions, access cover and desludging access before installation. The operator should then establish a maintenance schedule based on actual usage and the rate at which grease and sludge accumulate.
