Irelands Largest Supplier of Sand Polishing Filter Materials
Percolation Sand Ireland – Certified Sand for Sand Polishing Filters
We supply independently tested and certified percolation sand in Ireland for use in sand polishing filters. Our filtration sand is trusted by many of Ireland’s leading wastewater treatment system suppliers and manufacturers.
Sand polishing filters are an ideal wastewater solution for small sites or locations with limited soil depth, thanks to their compact footprint and high treatment efficiency.
Percolation Supplies has delivered certified filtration sand for numerous large sand filter installations across Ireland, including schools and nursing homes, as well as a growing number of domestic wastewater treatment systems. Private homeowners increasingly choose sand polishing filters due to their space-saving design and lower installation costs.
Unlike soil polishing filters, which often require large garden mounds and up to ten loads of certified soil, sand polishing filters typically require just one load of certified sand, making them a more cost-effective and practical solution.
Certified Filtration Sand – Testing & Quality Control
The quality of our percolation and filtration sand is strictly controlled through:
In-house mechanical sieve analysis
Hydrometer analysis
This ensures consistent grain size distribution and compliance with EPA requirements for sand polishing filters.
Importance of Sand Grain Size in Sand Polishing Filters
Sand grain size is critical to the performance of a sand polishing filter. It directly affects:
Wastewater loading capacity
Filtration rate
Depth of particulate penetration
Final effluent quality
Filter efficiency depends not only on grain size, but also on the uniformity coefficient (Uc) of the sand.
A uniformity coefficient of less than 4 ensures a well-sorted sand filter, reducing the risk of saturated zones caused by abrupt textural changes. These zones can limit oxidation, promote clogging, and reduce the filter’s effectiveness to simple straining rather than proper biological treatment.
For this reason, using the correct certified percolation sand is essential for long-term filter performance.
Natural Silica Sand for Wastewater Treatment
The coarse and fine silica sands we supply are a natural, uncrushed product sourced directly from the ground.
Unlike crushed quarry materials or recycled glass, which can bind together over time, our naturally rounded silica sand grains do not compact, ensuring consistent hydraulic performance and longer filter lifespan.
Independent studies show that silica sand removes significantly more phosphorus (P) from wastewater effluent than alternative filter media. Phosphorus is one of the most harmful pollutants affecting Ireland’s rivers and lakes.
EPA Compliant & Fully Certified Percolation Sand
All grades of sand supplied meet Table 10.2 of the EPA Code of Practice 2021 and are fully certified by an accredited certification body for use in sand polishing filters in Ireland.
